First container leaves Malta for Haiti
Video: Paul Spiteri Lucas
A container full of blankets today left the Civil Protection Department in Marsa for Haiti.
This is Malta’s first container to the earthquake stricken country. More are expected to follow after charity organisations in Haiti requested more food last night.
Malta’s container is being shipped to Caucedo in the Dominican Republic from where it will then be taken to Port-au-Prince.

Maltese aid agencies including the Maltese Church's Caritas and Civil Protection Department have all done a wonderful job.
We also donated money during Sunday Masses some 2 weeks ago apart from the collection of blankets, tinned food and medical supplies which will be sent through the CPD or through the Albanian Red Cross (the latter is catering for the Albania floods containers).
In Haiti ,blankets will be utilized as shelter protection instead of roof tops or for the survivors to use as mattresses to lie on. Bottled water is also used in remote areas where they do not have have water pumps or water tankers or in hospitals where the most hygienic water is needed for casualties. A word of praise should also go to SOS Malta and Malteser International for their urgent response to send medical staff.

A container full of blankets to Haiti!!! Lovely!!!! Does anybody, no matter how well-meaning, know that Port au Prince is at sea level in the Caribbean, in the Tropics.?? The ambient temperature practically all the year round is around 25-28C with high humidity! Mosquito nets, treated with repellents, might have been much more useful.
At the moment, I am in Guatemala, also in the tropicsand at sea level, and it is unbearbly hot. I certainly would not welcome any blankets. Please, please, think properly before sending any humanitarian aid to places we are not familiar with.
