The outgoing Speaker of the House of Representatives, Louis Galea said yesterday he had told the Prime Minister two weeks ago he would not contest the casual election for the seat that would be vacated by European Commissioner-designate John Dalli. Dr Galea gave a timeline of how he was nominated to sit on the European Court of Auditors.
At a meeting on January 18, Dr Galea said he informed Lawrence Gonzi about his decision not to stand, adding that, as long as he enjoyed the confidence of both sides of the House, he was ready to continue to serve as Speaker.
During the same meeting, Dr Galea said Malta's nomination to the Court of Auditors was discussed and Dr Gonzi said he was ready to consider him for the post, although he would prefer him to remain as Speaker.
Dr Galea replied that he needed to consult his family, which he did. He also spoke to Josef Bonnici - who has served on the court for the past six years - and who told him he had what was needed to serve on the court. Then, on January 25, Dr Galea wrote to the Prime Minister telling him he would accept the nomination with pleasure.
Dr Galea said he viewed the nomination as an expression of confidence, an honour and an opportunity for him to continue to serve.
He said he also informed Opposition Leader Joseph Muscat before the news became public knowledge.
