Man jailed for theft of animals from Razzett tal-Hbiberija
The animals at Razzett tal-Hbiberija.
A man was imprisoned and another two received lesser sentences today after being convicted of stealing animals from Razzett tal-Hbiberija (Park of Friendship) in December 2007.
Louis Ronayne, 26 of Kirkop was jailed for two years after the court found that he had ignored previous opportunities given to him by a court to reform. He was also ordered to serve out four years jail imposed in a previous sentence.
Salvino Ronayne, 20 of Marsascala, was placed under probation for three years after the court heard that since a previous conviction, he had made progress in reforming himself.
Kevin Portelli, 32 of Fgura was handed a two-month jail term suspended for three years after the court ruled that he deserved an opportunity to reform without going to prison.
The three had also been convicted of handling stolen property and causing hardship to the animals.
It resulted that Louis and Salvino Ronayne had first entered the razzett and stolen a monkey. Two days later they stole a deer which they sold to Kevin Portelli. A few days later all three together stole other animals from the razzett. The monkey and the deer had a value of € 1,397 while the other animals were worth €1,444.
Some €200 in damage was caused to Razzett tal-Hbiberija.

For the people complaining about monetary value, if someone (may God willingly never happen) gets injured, would you ask for a written apology which in the end is nothing, or some monetary compensation to make up for the damage that was dealt to you???
And not to go into merits, that yes, animals do have a price. Just take a look at butchers, and ask them how much they bought the meat, or the animal as whole for.... which in the end, at least I eat heartily.

Is it all about money these days?? Is that what a living creature is in the eyes of our judiciary system; just an amount of Euro?
I have 2 dogs... I got them for free as both were rescued... and I wouldn't sell them for any amount of Euro offered to me. In my eyes and my heart their value surpasses by far any value that can be set down in monetary terms.

It was reported that these persons caused hardship to the animals.....what types of hardships? Justice should be more rigid when it come to animal cruelty...we are still too leniant. These animals cannot defend themselves!

Adrian Agius - you are so right! An animal's value should never be quoted in euro or any other coin. They are indeed priceless!

"a two-month jail term suspended for three years after the court ruled that he deserved an opportunity to reform without going to prison"
...so it takes Court to HEAR that someone deserves an opportunity to reform without going to prison?
...and another one will reform himself during 6 years in prison...into WHAT he will reform himself?

has the court taken into consideration that these animals are used for specialised therapy needed by 'less fortunate' human beings? are they going to be given a 'chance' to reform like the given 'chance to reform' by the courts?
how sick our justice system is, fed up of it

@ Adrian Agius:
Good point. However, since we still live in a speciesist world, all non-human animals are legally considered as either private or collective human property. Once the legal property status of non-human animals is removed, all selling and buying of non-human animals (including animals killed for their meat) would be illegal. Therefore, as long as it is legal to eat meat (for instance), there will be price-tags on non-human animals. It all rests on their property status.

As far as I remember, some animals died as a result of this crime.
Has this not been taken into account by the Courts?
