Speaker explains nomination to Court of Auditors
Louis Galea informed PM on January 18 that he would not be candidate in casual election
The Speaker, Dr Louis Galea, revealed today that he told the Prime Minister on January 18 that he did not intend to stand in the casual election to take John Dalli's seat in Parliament.
In a statement Dr Galea also explained how he was nominated to serve on the Court of Auditors and said he considered the nomination as an honour and a sign of confidence.
Dr Galea said that during his very cordial meeting with Dr Gonzi on January 18 he told the Prime Minister about his decision not to stand, adding that as long as he enjoyed the confidence of both sides of the House, he was ready to continue to serve as Speaker.
During the same meeting, Dr Galea said that Malta's nomination to the Court of Auditors was discussed and Dr Gonzi said he was ready to consider him for the post, although he would prefer him to stay in the Chair in Parliament.
Dr Galea replied that he needed to consult his family.
Dr Galea said he consulted his family and also spoke to Prof Josef Bonnici - who has served on the court for the past six years - who told him he had the necessary qualities to serve on the court. On January 25 Dr Galea wrote to the Prime Minister telling him that he would accept the nomination with pleasure.
Dr Galea said he viewed the nomination as an expression of confidence, an honour, and an opportunity for him to continue to serve.
He said he informed Opposition leader Joseph Muscat before the news became public.
