Civil servant Salv Gauci has been appointed Chief Electoral Commissioner, succeeding Edward Gatt, the Department of Information said yesterday.

One of the first issues on his plate will be to stamp out abuse in the issuing of identity cards.

Recently, the Labour Party wrote to the Electoral Commission asking it to discuss this issue after a woman admitted in court she had been using a fraudulently obtained ID card issued in someone else’s name.

Born in Għargħur in 1949, Mr Gauci is the father of three. He studied at St Aloysius College and joined the public service in 1967. He held several positions including director of the Budget Office and director general in the Finance Ministry’s budget division.

Mr Gauci followed courses on budget and the management of public finances at Harvard University.

Mr Gatt retired on January 23, his 65th birthday.
