Twenty-two players recently took part in the Malta Squash Living Well Open which was played at the Hilton.
Carl Camilleri, the only national team member in the tournament, proved too strong for the rest, dropping just one set in all his matches as both finalists had to overcome tough opposition along the way.
Camilleri had to deal with experienced players Anthony Schembri and Arthur Castillo while Balzan had to overcome Nigel Dunkerley and a much-improved Adrian Camilleri to reach the final.
In the final, Camilleri took a 2-0 lead but Balzan fought hard to win the third set.
Camilleri's fitness and improved skills, however, saw him through in the end to secure his first official Malta Squash tournament after beating Balzan 3-1.
The A Plate was won by Martin Mallia. He was two sets down against Robert Sultana but hit back strongly to win the next three sets and clinch the title.
The B Section (for beginners and intermediates) saw Jonathan Sammut beating Swede Daniel Ahlander, one of six foreigners in the tournament, 3-2 to earn the right to play in the A Section in the next tournament.
The B Plate was won by veteran George Goodall.
Malta Squash distributed prizes to the winners sponsored by Hilton, Myoka Spa and Fontanella. The next Malta Squash tournament will be played at the Union Club on February 27.
