Fifteen companies will be installing photovoltaic solar panels on the roofs of government buildings following a call made by the Resources Ministry.

They are proposing to install 75,000 square metres of panels at a total cost of €25 million. The panels will contribute enough energy to supply the national grid and the firms will be paid for doing so.

The new scheme, announced in this year's Budget, is aimed at meeting the needs of 1,500 families.

It is part of the national effort to meet the EU-set target of producing 10 per cent of Malta's energy needs from clean, renewable sources by 2020.
