Isle of MTV Malta Special returns on June 30
The 2010 Isle of MTV Malta Special will be held on Wednesday June 30, MTV announced today.
"The free open air concert will take place in the spectacular Fosos (Granaries) Square in Floriana on the beautiful island of Malta, with an estimated audience of 50,000 people.
"Now in its 4th consecutive year, the Isle of MTV Malta Special is unique in offering young people across Europe and beyond an exclusive opportunity to experience some of the world's best new and established artists in the sunshine of the Maltese islands," MTV said.
Past artists have included The Black Eyed Peas, Lady Gaga, Enrique Iglesias, One Republic and N.E.R.D amongst others.
"The 30th June Isle of MTV Malta Special concert promises to be, yet again, this summer's must-see event," it added.
The concert is held in collaboration with the Malta Tourism Authority.

To all those saying that it is a waste of time and it doesnt bring in any tourists, i went to last years Isle of MTV, and i travelled from Australia to see it!! i wasnt alone either as i was with 3 others from Australia.
Concerts like this are great for a countries economy. Think of the people that attend; these people need a place to stay, so there is money for the hotels. they need places to eat, there is money for the restaraunt, they need personal items, general shopping, this all equals money for Malta.
I think alot of people complaining about this should really take a long hard look at themselves and maybe realise that instead of whinging whenever a youth based event is organised, to sit back relax and reap the rewards.

If Beyonce performs i will set camp there a week before!
They should get some good, but not-too-commercial artists like Leona Lewis, and a band like Evanescence.

Please stop bringing all these commercial artists with no talent and bring some truly talented artists or bands such as The Killers, Arctic Monkeys, Radiohead, Florence + The Machine. And wouldn't it be amazing if Noel and Liam Gallagher sorted out their differences and made a surprise reunion at the Isle Of Mtv? But sadly these artists and bands have no chance of coming.

Please orginizers for the sake of our beloved country, if you want Isle of MTV to be a tourist attraction event do not dream of bringing here:
Taylor Swift
Jonas Brothers
Mylie Cyrus
Pixie Lott
Do bring to perform here some of these great artists:
U2
Coldplay
Madonna
Robbie Williams
Kings of Leon
Beyonce
Black Eyed Peas
Green Day
Nelly Furtado
Timbaland
Empire Of The Sun
Foo Fighters
Franz Ferdinand
Keane
Pink
Linkin Park
Nickelback
Rihanna
Shakira
Cheryl Cole
The Temper Trap
Timbaland
and there will be the whole wide World on the Granaries.
Am I asking too much?
We have a recent example of how a real concert is held, and this is The 52nd Annual Grammy Awards, which took place on 31th January 2010. (It's available on Youtube)

I think the Isle of MTV was a great success for Malta as it attracted more tourists and exposed Malta to artists around the world. I think it is a pity that it will end this year :(
On a personal note, I hope artists like Beyonce, Leona Lewis, Taylor Swift and Timbaland will come for this final show

Its one of the LPP next summer voyages on da mix. Its a splendid issue that Isle Of MTV Malta Special oraganizers are invest in Malta for the fourth consecutive year. For the Maltese Islands is an asset concerts like these, gain the economy like money, tourism and at the same time promote Malta as a place you want to be during summer meanwhile you discover the serenity. hospitality, culture and sunshine till the sky falls down.......
Enjoy this massive event on da mix!!!!

It would be nice having some decent bands in Malta, Depeche mode or Muse or whatever you are mentioning, however i think the crowd will be smaller - this event is intended for Music for the masses!
Anyone who enjoys critisizing Lady Gaga should think twice, she has catchy, femmist songs - at the end of it all she is making loads of money.
Beyonce is one good Artist too!
Afterall whatever comes to Malta is something for Malta as it stimulates the economic wheel and gives certain Maltese something to look forward to.
Music is fun and should create Unity - so stop comparing generes of MUSIC!

I guess you don't have any teenage kids then! There's nothing wrong with Miley Cyrus! I took my daughter to watch a concert at the O2 in London in December and I have to say, she is a great performer live. Even I enjoyed it and I would take my daughter again!
Also, the supporting act was her brother in Metro Station so why not, after all it is supposed to be a 'family event'. Lady Gaga strutting her stuff half naked is hardly what I call 'family material'!
Agreed with many though, I would love Robbie to come!

Isle of MTV was infested with 12 year olds emos screaming at metro station and lady gaga etc... linkin park and rammstein would rock the night but that's not going to happen knowing that MTV is all about mainstream rubbish(american pop culture). i enjoy trance parties at least it's better than this kids show. i bet you miley cyrus, 50 cent and emo band are on the list lol

Nobody is saying that these concerts should not come to Malta, but NOT at the taxpayers expense. They DO NOT bring any EXTRA tourists. MTA should spend this money wiser and not throw it away. But then ..................
Last year, one singer uttered some rude offensive words to the crowd and apparently many of those present loved it!!! Others didn't even know what she said and cheered her!!!!! And this by courtesy of the taxpayers!!!

Dear Kenneth, I have "Farscape" from KS and Lisa Gerrard. The combination of KS and Lisa have indeed produced another spontaneous music masterpiece !! I am looking where is he to perform next in Germany as want to see him perform live surrounded by those "Moog Sequencers". My favourite albums are "X" (famous for Ludwig II von Bayern) and "Dosburg Online". I think he has well over 80 albums to his credit !!
Best regards, Jesmond.

Well people, Malta will never be at the top of the world's football charts, no !! There is what is called, Sports Tourism afterall no !! So I say couple Music with Malta's heritage and Malta can invent a unique niche in the world of cultured music tourism. The success of the Malta International Jazz Festival is proof of this, or example. Why not cleverly diversify here too. In Nürnberg, every year in summer there is an event called the "Bardentreffen". Its basically a festival of music spread over a 3 day period. The inner city, which is not that big, has a multitude of stages built at vantage points. A performers programme sets who will play where and at what time. Indeed famous musicians such Anne Clark, the Leningrad Cowboys and other famous ones have participated. The event is a huge success every year.
Here have a look at this German website (English is available)
http://www.bardentreffen.de/
In Würzburg, there is also a yearly event called the Africa Festival too. There is great African music there too coupled with good food, and so on !!

Help yourselves, have alook.
Malta has so much high quality potential here.

Ha Ha. Predictably we have calls for Metal bands or Dance Music. It's MTV you're going to get dance music!
I too would love some Indie rock but would probably be in a minority of about 6 people along with a couple of posters below.
Still here's my plea anyway - The Rifles or Kasabian please...

I wonder how people still attended these rubbish festivals supposedly labelled as 'music' events. Start listening to real music and leave the mainstream music industry, whose sole purpose it to make money, to rot in its own wealth. We have a society of brainwashed people who only listen to what big companies like Sony, EMI & co, want them to listen.
Listen to maltese band 'Forsaken' who are regarded as one of the best bands in the world in their genre and have a huge following worldwide. Musicians of the highest order yet they only have an audience of about 200 at best yet artists from eMpTyV gather 50,000. Misteries of life!

Whilst MTV is a good event for the maltese island especially considering the fact that it's free, however it can obviously be organized better and I will mention a few important points which are most of the time unforeseen:-
1. Security issues, since the access to the granaries is not really controlled if something had to happen then I would forecast that it would be total chaos. I am also convinced that the amount of security and paramedics is not sufficient to cater for all those people.
2. The Venue, whilst the granaries is a decent open space we do have other spaces that are probably more adequate to these kind of events (keeping other aspects in mind like parking). Ta' Qali would have better access, would cause less traffic congestions and the event could be controlled better.
3. The Artistic material, every one knows that Malta is not getting the best new and established artists but they are only getting artists for the moneys they are being paid. Not only the artists are not 'The Best' but we also end up getting the same artists repeatedly which in my opinion is extremely uncreative.

@Edwin Abela
If your referring for me, then I assure that I am not against such an event per se (For the sake of tourism and its contribution to the economy).
However, I am against this pitiful mentality both of locals and organisers that the quality of artists are always those who base their career on superficiality and apperances.
When is MTV going to get artists of great skill like Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Stratovarius, Amon Amarth, Machine Head, Devil Driver and so on.
Is it that impossible to pick at least one band of an alternative (metal) style to compliment a more diverse audience.
Obviously this will never happen, considering the masses like superficial artists

Feb 1st 2010, 21:43
The pleas for bands is amusing. Malta does not decide which artists come, MTV does. MTV chooses the artists which are supposed to have big hits in the summer. The biggests bets would be on bands/artists that are about to release and album before summer i guess.

Love this kind of event. Pls this year DO NOT bring none of the following;
Miley Cyrus
Taylor Swift
Jonas Brothers

I can't believe the moaners and groaners here! There's just no satisfying some people! If there aren't large scale events of this sort (like there weren't for many, many years), you get everyone up in arms complaining. I very much hope it is as successful as the past ones, a major event that is pulled off with nothing but plus points. However, it is very contradictory for MTA to spend vast ammounts in the name of advertising, (as they do on UK football) and at the same time impose an advertising free order to bars and restaurants etc when it comes to awnings, umbrellas and outdoor furniture. In their words the advertising of certain products is cheap and has no place on Malta, thus imposing higher costs on the establishments. Can you imagine picking up a holiday brochure and seeing all those colourful resorts and then turning the page and see a resort with no familiar names, i think i like many would just turn the page again!

Definitely a very good officially approved alternative to Malta becoming an "Ibiza type of Clubbing Destination" !!! Thats for sure !!! I would love to read that maybe one day Jean Michel Jarre would make a spetacular concert in Malta. His concerts are a technological mix of sythesised music and laser shows. Maybe a combined concert together with Rondo Veneziano !!! That would definitely redefine the music cultural calendar of the islands. Combine that with Barrock Valletta somehow, wow......!!!!... where does my imagination take me ??? There is plenty of potential here, cultured Maltese musicians and music lovers !!! Think about it, people !!! Shift into gear, MTA, Music and Arts Associations!!! Further potentials are Klaus Schulze, (the man never stops making albums - mastermind of electronic music), Tangerine Dream, Vangelis......... !!! So much potential, here !!!!
