GOL welcomes Toni Abela's clarification
The pro-life group Gift of Life Foundation has thanked Labour deputy leader Toni Abela for clarifying his position on abortion in cases of rape when there is a possibility that the baby would be severely disabled.
GOL was reacting to a statement by Dr Abela carried on timesofmalta.com where he declared: "I have since then changed my view and my position is against any abortion."
Dr Abela issued his statement after being asked on Dissett to clarify comments on abortion he made some years ago.
Gift of Life said it would also like to thank the PL for again making its pro-life position absolutely clear by stating that the party was against all forms of abortion.

If secularism means death then it is not welcome.
It is not just religious people who oppose death and support life.
Life is already cheapened enough like some throwaway commodity.
GOL at least speaks out for the defenceless unborn when others would rather be politically correct and just look the other way.
The basic human right is the right to life and without defending that right what else is left?
If one persons's freedom affects another persons's right to live then that freedom is false.
I am sure there are many other organisations which can fight other evils in this world, so expecting GOL to deal with the world's problems is rather silly!
Trivialising the efforts spent on the defence of life is very poor indeed.
It is important that unborn children have a voice.
At the end of the day we all have to make a choice about which candidate we are voting for and I for one will question my prospective MP closely about his or her respect for human life from conception to natural death. A negative or wishy-washy "pro-choice" approach will mean I will give my vote to somebody who respects life completely.

Until now I have always voted PN; PL, till now, has been a no-contest.
I will vote Labour the day it decides to really commit itself to freedom of individual rights, as excercised elsewhere in Europe. That is commit itself to the introduction of abortion, divorce and the evolving of the censorship board into a ratings board.
These should be what a secular party in the 21st century should be aiming at, after all! The pursual of personal freedom! We can't keep being governed by the Church's agenda, rather than a secular one!
Please, PL & Joseph Muscat, when are you coming out of the shackles of a closed, fanatically-religious insular mentality and openly commit yourself to secularism?!
Only then will we have a real choice on the ballot sheet!

Although I am against abortion, I still cannot understand why we ared making a fuss about the rights of the unborn child. Then as soon as they are born we forget about their right to live, and disregard the pollution we are exposing our children to for the sake of some big guy making millions. Why doesn't GOL take a stand against the tons of toxic waste the new Power Station will be producing. This might also cause abortions, birth abnormalities, Asthma and even cancer.
Or does GOL flex its muscles against frail women who end up with an unplanned pregnancy, and shut up where the big sharks including the government are concerned.

Irrespective of whether one is anti-abortion or not, I ask, what's so progressive or modern about a political party, as represented by one of its Deputy Leaders, backing down from maintaining its beliefs, because it was hounded and harassed by an NGO?

GoL should not worry about local voices. The strong voices come Europe who keeps inventing rights every 30 seconds. Last year I hosted a group of young staffers from the EU and they felt very strong on abortion and considered this as a right for females in their quest for emancipation. I need hardly say what I replied when this question came up. The foreigner emphasised of what happens in a case of rape as they always think in the "minority" so that these same laws are made available to the "majority" over time.
We all know the issues at the Council of Europe and the discussons that take place at the European Parliament.
It is in these circles that GoL should be present to know what many Europeans think about abortion, and the pressure they want to make for a change on our laws in Malta.

Last friday i was disgusted when two tv crews kept stopping PL delegates asking them
wether they are in favour of abortion and what they thought of dr. Tony Abela being in
favour of abortion. A drowning govt. is clutching at every straw.

Abortion is murder whether you like it or not. Being pro choice is just being pro the murder of innocent unborn babies. Have you ever seen the results of an abortion? I have even seen the result of a late abortion. It made me cry - a murdered baby.

Any rhetoric declaration about being anti abortion is superfluous until that person is put through the real test.
Cannibalism is also sinful, unnatural, revolting and it goes against everybody’s moral value. None of the 747 survivors who crashed in the middle of nowhere would have dreamt that one day they would resort to eating human flesh to survive, but they did and the Pope gave them absolution.
I would take my hat off to that woman who didn’t go through an abortion when her life was in serious danger but I would refuse to condemn the others who were not so blatantly courageous and bought a flight ticket to Sicily.

I would like to deplore in the strongest manner the bullying tactics continuously adopted by GOL, implying that all who do not share their views are a bunch of callous murderers. Shame also on the PN for jumping onto the inquisition bandwagon.
GOL are doing a disservice to our country not for being "pro-life", but for being totally anti-democratic and intimidatory towards all who dare differ. Such tactics have no place in a democracy.
I woud also like to express my disappointment at Toni Abela, who chose to succumb to GOL's harrassment and probably his party's pressure, at the expense of his principles. Is this what being progressive is all about?
There is no progressive movement in Malta.... pity Joseph Muscat chose to hijack the word.

LOL! On Dissett Toni Abela spoke very clearly in favour of abortion in certain cases but CONVENIENTLY he changed his opinion because of a backlash within the party!

Let's see if NetTv and other PN Media read out this statement from GOL and close this captions once and for all. If they are man enough they should give it due importance as to the first statement issued by GOL!!

Messers Gift of Life Foundation, did the worst thing possible when they let the Partit Nazzjonalista and Net News, to use them in their endeavour to create a storm in a tea cup regarding the question of abortion vis a vis the L.P. I have known Dr Tony Abela for quite a number of years and can vouch for him as being a gentleman, a good lawyer, a very good father of his three young children and above all an altruistic man. I always asked myself, how can a married man and a dedicated father be in favour of any form of abortion. As for Joseph, he always declared that his best moments in his life were when he held his twin daughters in his hands. Any more worries now?
