Toni Abela insists he opposes abortion
Labour deputy leader Toni Abela insisted yesterday he opposed abortion in the wake of comments he made on last Tuesday's TV discussion programme Dissett.
In a statement yesterday, Dr Abela said he would continue to be in favour of the right to life in accordance with his party's position.
On the programme, he said, he had been asked about a 2003 interview by a newspaper where he was questioned about abortion in the context of the war in the Balkans. Dr Abela had reiterated a position he had taken seven years ago when he said he agreed with abortion in specific cases, especially when it came to rape or children being born with disability.
Dr Abela said he was the only lawyer who had sought an injunction to stop a woman from going abroad to have an abortion.
"I gave the service against no payment, and as everyone who knows me knows, I do not fight cases I don't believe in," he continued.

I always insisted that if Labour keep a low profile they will be able to win votes and cruise to the next election.
PN have a tendency to slip on slippery ground sometimes....a few here and there, min ma jadimx ma jizbaljax....
Lo and Behold, this rule is rewritten by the labour party who keep slipping on dry ground even when they are staying idle.
Can someone answer me....what on earth is going to happen if God forbid, the Labour makes it to government? Do they even have the intelligence to run a government without slipping and loosing control after just 22 months? The labour-led local councils are already one huge mess...huge deficits, mismanagement, confusion, inefficiencies, etc.
May God help us.

Same as Bush, Clinton, Bush and Obama visiting Russia, after Reagan called Russia the 'evil empire'?
Same as Richard Nixon visiting China (I believe AFTER Mintoff paid the human rights champions a visit)?
You obviously don't know much about world affairs and how diplomacy works.
One does not have to agree with other governments' policies to invite their Heads to visit Malta or for the Maltese government representatives to visit their countries.
You should stick to writing about something you may know a bit about, however little that may be - and that will give us a long rest!

The way it's blowing for the pn u-turns Martinelli.
Perhaps I ought to remind you of the u-turns that the PN made when it first not only attacked Gaddafi and denigrated the Arabs but is now licking the same Gaddafi for his next visit. They did the same to the Chinese and are now licking them.
Do you want to talk about u-turns Martinelli?

This must be a record.
Two U-turns in the span of one week!
From where is the wind blowing?

The Deputy Leader for Party Affairs cannot contest a general election or the European Parliament election unless he has resigned two years before the relevant election, so there was never and issue of using his post as Deputy Leader for Party Affairs to promote abortion.

somuch for the progressive labour party....just another bunch of religious fanatics imposing their views on others who do not think the sdame..the gift of life movement world wide is followed by people who do commit murder in the name of pro life..but thats ok,as an unborn for them has more rights then the children who have been born..pro life is yet another form of controlling people...we live in a democracy but when it comes to religious conservatives we all have to do things their way...malta is being dragged backwards by the religious fanatics..everyone knows the better run, healthier and more educated countries have a total seperation og religion and state and a large core of non religiousness..malta grow up

Excellent news, Mr Abela!
I feel certain that you have made this statement not because of the election but because you truly support life. And those who value human life are more likely to vote for you due to your outspoken and deeply felt stance on this issue.
And without the fundemental right to life being protected nothing else is safe.
Many will not like this, of course, because they say it has nothing to do with politics or that it clouds other issues.
But people like yourself decide the fate of others on a daily basis so it is important for all to know that the sanctity of life itself is safe in your hands!
