Protecting the most significant buildings, monuments and features of Pembroke (4)

Ex-British Military Services Rifle/Pistol Range, off Madliena Tower, Pembroke

This was one of the former British Army small arms shooting ranges. This "pistol range" consisted of a strip of levelled garigue with a concrete platform for target mounts at the seaward end and a number of traversing earth mounds along the strip for the firing of pistols. There were distance markers set at intervals from the target mounts. The soldiers fired their weapons from static locations (mounds) according to the required distance. Although disturbed after the site's abandonment by the British Services, the concrete platform and parts of the metal target supports remain.

Mepa scheduled the Rifle/Pistol Range at Pembroke as a Grade 2 feature of historic, architectural and contextual value as it forms part of a larger already scheduled military complex as per Government Notice number 880/09 in the Government Gazette dated October 30, 2009.
