A man and a boy were hospitalised this afternoon after the van they were travelling in mounted the pavement and crashed into an electricity pole in Qormi,

The crash happened at Triq Is-Sebh shortly after 4 p.m. Another child who was in the van was not injured, the police said.

Rescuers from the Civil Protection Department had to use cutting equipment to free the driver from the wreckage.

The police said the man, 43, is a foreigner resident in Paola. He suffered serious injuries which are not life-threatening.

The boys are a nine-year-old from Paola and a 12-year-old from Zabbar. The latter has been kept in hospital for observation.
