Junior Open at VLTC comes to a close

The Vittoriosa Lawn Tennis Club (VLTC) have just organised their Junior Open which was sponsored by Nexia International. The tournament, under the auspices of the Malta Tennis Federation, attracted the participation of 48 players.

The girls U-10 singles was won by Angele Vanhear with Chantelle Azzopardi placing runner-up while the boys title went to Benjamin Farrugia. In the final, he beat Jeremy Montanaro Gauci in a deciding third set tiebreak.

In the girls U-12 event, unseeded Rebecca McCarthy emerged winner after fending off the challenge offered by second seed, Katrina Sammut, in a tight final 6-3 3-6 6-4. The no.1 boys' seed, Mark Schranz, was a clear winner in the U-12 category, dropping only six games in total and beating Farrugia 6-2 6-1 in the final.

The U-14 girls singles final again brought together the U-12 finalists.

This time, Sammut had the better of McCarthy 6-2 6-1. Matthew Cassar Torreggiani won the U-14 event after defeating his brother Bernard, the top seed, 6-3 7-5.

Maria Giorgia Farrugia Sacco left a very good impression in her first showing in the U-16 category. In the final, she beat Susannah Mifsud who had to retire because of injury.

Raphael Sammut won the U-16 boys title. He beat Patrick Georgiev 3-6 6-1 6-1 in the final.

Consolation events were also held, generating increased interest among first round participants.

Jean Karl Azzopardi won the boys consolation event and Duncan D'Alessandro finished runner-up while Martina Cuschieri emerged winner of the girls event and Ylenia Micallef the runner-up.
