Cosco, China's biggest shipping line, has started a new service to Malta, its second in a few months.

Chinese Ambassador Zhang Keyuan yesterday welcomed the first ship to arrive on the new weekly service, which starts from Singapore and goes on to Fos Sur Mere in France.

The company also operates a service from Shanghai.

China Ocean Shipping Co (Cosco) owns and operates 550 merchant ships and handles more than half a million containers every year. Its ships operate 80 routes, servicing 1,300 ports in 160 countries.

The ambassador was shown around the MV Cosco Shanghai by its master, Li Jun Ming, and Alex Polidano, managing director of local agents Ocean and Sky Logistics.
