Day beats Drago 5-4

Tony Drago came close to creating an upset in the opening round of the Welsh Open after he went down to home favourite Ryan Day 5-4 in Newport last night.

The Maltese professional looked on course to oust the world no. 6 after taking a 4-3 lead but failed to wrap up the match to bow out of the tournament.

Drago started brightly winning three of the opening four frames to go into the interval 3-1 ahead.

Day started the second session strongly to level the match at three-all. But Drago won the seventh frame to move just one frame away from victory.

However, Day quickly secured the eighth frame to force a decider. Here Drago looked on his way when leading 54-46 but missed the green and Day went on to wrap up the frame and seal a 5-4 win.

Day's second round opponent will be Stephen Hendry who beat Dave Harold 5-1 last night.
