Broke wife's nose in fight
A man who broke his wife's nose after he allegedly caught her with another man was yesterday given a suspended jail term.
The man attacked his wife at about 9 p.m. on Monday in their Fgura flat during a violent fight about her alleged infidelity, sources close to the case said.
The unemployed man in his 30s, who is not being named to protect the identity of his wife, pleaded guilty to seriously injuring, threatening her and breaching the peace.
In submissions on punishment, lawyer Charmaine Cherrett said her client had cooperated with the police.
Police Inspector Alexander Grech asked the court to hand down a punishment that matched the severity of the case.
Magistrate Joseph Apap Bologna took into consideration the fact that the man will be living with his mother before handing down a two-year jail term suspended for four years.
The magistrate also placed his wife under a protection order and ordered him to sign a guarantee of €1,000.

@ Joseph Camilleri - And you think that some commentators would not simply love re-criminalising 'adultery'????? You simply have no idea what many Maltese people are prone to do!

While we're at it, we might as well go one step backwards and suggest the re-criminalisation of adultery. Or perhaps two steps backwards and recommend stoning for adultery in conformity with Biblical marriage 'values'.

Excellent Mr. Zammit. What a true gentleman you are. So if the wife did something wrong it is all right for the man to hit her. Correcting with violence is just what one should do. How I pity you. A male whose ideas I hope are on the way to extinction. Would it have been o.k for the woman to hit the man had she caught him in bed with another woman? I would argue equally NO. But I bet you would not have agreed either eh? Because God forbid if a woman were to take it all out against the poor husband hux? Il-mara trid tahfer, imma r-ragel dak miskien jista' jkun debboli. Shame for such reasoning in this day and age!

@ Joseph Zammit: I guess in your opinion , his is one of the many Maltese traditional values that you want to keep! Huh! Some 'values'.

As the old saying goes it takes two to tango. If indeed the man's wife was seeing someone else then what exactly was the husband doing or indeed not doing to cause this behaviour?
Nothing gives a husband the right to physically assault his wife, and I do mean nothing. What message does this case send out to husbands in Malta?

I can in a way understand this man for becoming beserck while catching her in the act of betrayal, but I mean I have heard a lot of stories from men who caught their wife in flagranti, with their own brother, or with the man living on the flat on top, I mean if one is not involved, it is actually funny thinking about it. however violence is never acceptable, no matter how hurt one is, one should run outside and calm down first for a few days or weeks before facing one's spouse in such situations cause otherwise it can lead to serious violence.
