A beautiful winter day at San Blas
The superb natural beauty of the Maltese islands can be appreciated in this photo of San Blas in Gozo taken by reader Martin Farrugia.
"Let us all work towards maintaing this," Mr Farrugia wrote when he submitted the photo for publication.

The less publicity San Blas get the better. Do not give developers any ideas because MEPA will somehom find an excuse to grant a building permit. Only in Malta an ODZ means the opposite.

Super photo. San Blas is beautiful bay and because you really need a 4x4 to get down to it, few people go there. We used to sail into the bay and swim to the beach. However, just occasionally we were aware of sewage in the sea. Thankfully, the problem now seems to have been rectified. An area of such natural beauty must be protected.

@ Chris Frendo
You pass through Nadur to go to this bay. The last part of the road is very steep and you have to walk, but this made the bay what it is. May it always stay so.

@ C.Pule`. You made me laugh. I said use of imagination. Use of imagination does not mean dreaming of a cheap seaside postcard with a crab and a beautiful lady. Trust a hot-bloodied male to ruin the poetry. I too can imagine a beautiful lady sunbathing on the beach and some louse (another name for crab) ogling her from behind the rock in the foreground. Maybe a parasite's idea of paradise but certainly NOT mine. For that kind of 'paradise' you and your lot have Paceville and its delicious offerings, all oozing charm under the slap (make-up) and artificial lighting and the cover of darkness that allows one to suspend belief, so what the heck! And presumably for the average Maltese, much easier to get to than San Blas. You are welcome to that heaven Pule`. I'll stick with Blas, without the crabs LoL!! Have a nice day.

If it was so easily available for people, I assure everyone that such a beautiful photograph would not have been possible to take, with a kiosk or a couple of umbrellas and riha ta chips entering your nostrils, and a few tourists sunbathing.
The photograph is very nice, if it had an animal or crab or tortoise in the background it would have completed the natural paradise we should be living in. Perhaps a beautiful lady sunbathing would not have been too disturbing either!!

@J.Pisani. Don't be put off my old son, we'll never be short of moaners in Malta. And, we, you and I - unfortunately, only a wish as I live away. Maybe one day - we would not need a four-wheel and stamina and youth. We could walk there and enjoy other beauties on the way and savour being alive and gradually come across this little corner of paradise. And savour it all unhindered. And sit and be thankful. And listen to the silence and the water lapping the shore. Can you hear the breeze whispering, PisaniJ.? And we could talk or shut up, and savour the moment. Paradise is all in the mind. All one needs is imagination, a positive outlook and total rejection of cynicism. In any case, paradise may not be all it is cracked up to be.
Maybe one day I'll make my way there all on my own - what's new? - and, with a couple of things in my ruck-sack and my walking-stick-cum-folding stool, I'd be as happy as the proverbial sandman.
I've noticed that in Malta, a beauty spot is a place that's visited, abused, built upon and settled in. Thus, killing the beauty.

@ Alfio Schembri : No, no, it's not a moan - it's just a hope (or a wish, call it what you like) that whoever is responsible for the destruction all around us will come to their senses. Yes it does seem negative, but it also shows the pulse of the people about these things...I just do not wish to become an example of " lais•sez faire ", the situation where the frog was eventually boiled to death without it realizing what was happening.

@ Aloisio David.
Thank you for the negative publicity on this bay. That way us San Blas residents can have the bay all to ourselves. ;-)
And for your information the sewege that WAS 'sweeping out into the sea" has been redirected to Mgarr ix-Xini about a year ago. In fact a sign by the Martime Authority has been placed to inform visitors that it is a good bay for swimming.
Come and see the bay for yourself, and I can assure you that the day you spend there will definitely be a day in PARADISE! ;-)

It seems that no one knows that this bay is polluted ... there sewage seeping out in the sea!!! IT IS FAR AWAY FROM PARADISE.
Still well done for the picture.

I go to this bay every day in summer! You gotta walk a long steep walk to get to it, however I do it easily since I got a jeep!
Gozo the BEST!

I went to San Blas verouis times and yes its a hassle and a very hard long walk to get there. But as always happens on these isalnds I went last summer and didnt bother making the usual trip. The sand couldnt be seen due to the multitude of umbrellas and deckchairs that some people put so u cant really sit anywhere unless u pay them.
And yet whoever is responsabile for such abuses are never o be seen.
So for whever enjoy San Blas in winter for its another thing in Summer

Malta has rightly been described as the island 'of yells, bells and smells', and that was sometime in the nineteenth century by some visiting poet. Add today's pollutions and social problems....and the imagined stress levels are palpable. Looking at such a little gem and knowing it is somewhere hereabouts - Gozo being only a ferry-ride away - is enough to uplift one's spirits. Just a note. Maybe its comparative inaccessibility is the reason for its charm. Can you imagine the picture had it been taken after the hordes had descended upon it. Keep it secluded. Keep it 'a hidden-away' little secret. There are many many others like it. Keep them 'secret' too, places to have recourse to when feeling stressed. Even if only through a photograph. Relaxation is all in the mind after all.
Thank you Martin Farrugia. Enjoy your photography and continue to share. It is an invaluable public service. You'll be doing more good than a hundred empty sermons. Thank you man!

@D Farrugia and Anthony Borg
True I do not dispute that [pretty bay has unfortunatly become just a name in being Pretty. No fault of the residents. However, seeing such a picture submitted above, how is it possible to simply write and have a moan, insead of being so grateful that we still have some places like San Blas to enjoy and someone like Martin Farrugia to forward us such beautiful photos.
P;lease Please do not get me wrong, I fully agree with you, but come on let's not always be negative.
@ Martin Farrugia. Thanks for your lovely picture. My only regret is not being there to enjoy it as well . However thanks to you I got a glimpse of what it looked like. Thanks a million and well done

@D.Farrugia - I agree with you. One feels a sense of hopelessness at the "power" these institutions have on us. They "know" and anticipate that people will grumble and then carry on with their personal lives - and so they, the powers responsible, do whatever they do in their own personal selfishness, ruining the natural enviroment at the expense of many. Where is the EU watchdog of the enviroment that we have heard so much about? Is their office in Malta blind and deaf?

Living in the south of Malta we have Pretty Bay at B,Bugia. We, residents try to keep it as pretty as possible but thanks to Mepa, I think that the name is going to be Mepa Bay.Everyone deserves a monument even those who don't care less about the environment!
