The parents of the murdered Maltese-Australian youngster Doujon Zammit have expressed disappointment that two men convicted of complicity in their son's death were not immediately put behind bars.

Doujon Zammit was beaten to death outside a nightclub on the Greek island of Mykonos in July 2008 following a holiday in Malta just a few days earlier to meet relatives.

The nightclub's bouncer, Marios Antonopoulos, on Thursday was jailed for 22-and-a-half years for causing an injury that led to Mr Zammit's death.

George Chatzioannou and Dimitris Varonas were convicted of complicity in the attack and got a prison sentence of just over seven and eight years respectively.

However, they were spared jail, at least for the time being, after the court granted them bail against a deposit of €10,000 because their lawyers said they would appeal.

Speaking to reporters right after the verdict, the victim's parents, Oliver and Rosemarie Zammit, raised questions about their release, pointing out that they could easily evade justice now.

"Two men that have been proven to be dishonest are going to be walking the streets," Mr Zammit told reporters in a broken voice outside the court house.

All three accused had the charges against them downgraded during the trial.

The bouncer had originally been accused of murder while Mr Chatzioannou and Mr Varonas were accused of being accessories to attempted murder. However, the court changed the charges to causing fatal bodily injury and involvement in causing bodily harm.

Mr Antonopoulos has also declared his intention to appeal but is being kept in jail.
