The following are the top stories in the Maltese and overseas press:

The Times leads with the hunting incident in Zabbar yesterday which left a young man fighting for his life. It also reports that a man was jailed for 16 months for defrauding an elderly cancer victim. In another story it says Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi will visit Malta in March.

The Malta Independent carries a picture of Gianfranco Fini, President of the Italian Chamber of Deputies, who was in Malta yesterday. It also features criticism by the Libyan Foreign Minister of the EU and NGOs regard illegal migration.

In-Nazzjon also leads with the shooting in Zabbar, saying it was an unfortunate shooting incident. It also features the tax credits for SMEs announced by the government yesterday.

l-orizzont like the other newspapers leads with the Zabbar shooting. It also says that 21 workers were out of a job yesterday after Marsalite Ltd in Marsa was closed by court order. The GWU said workers should not suffer the shortcomings of the management.

The overseas media:

EU Observer says the European Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid, Karel De Gucht, is expected in Haiti this morning to gain insight into where the EU can help best in rebuilding the earthquake-struck nation.

Meanwhile CANANews reports a strong aftershock measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale rocked Haiti yesterday, sparking a 'chorus of screams' as people fled from buildings.

The Wall Street Journal Europe says the Greek government is considering its options to cover its financing needs as new fears over the country's ability to borrow hammer its debt market.

US President Barack Obama has warned Democrats not to "jam" healthcare reforms through the Senate after a Republican won a seat in Massachusetts. He told ABC News any vote should wait until Scott Brown had taken up his seat, and lawmakers should seek to "coalesce" around parts they agreed on. Brown will be Massachusetts' first Republican senator since 1972.

Al Jazeera says the British and Yemeni governments have agreed to temporarily suspend all direct flights between the two countries as part of a series of measures by the UK government to protect Britons from terrorist attacks.

El Universal reports that a fight at the state prison in the city of Durango in Mexico, has left 23 inmates dead. The jail houses 2,025 criminals. Officials complain they are not equipped to handle violent drug dealers who are being held on federal charges.

London's The Times has a picture of 57-year-old Frances Inglis, the British mother who was jailed for life after being found guilty of giving her brain-damaged son a lethal heroin injection to end his "living hell". She killed her 22-year-old son Tom after he suffered severe head injuries when he fell out of a moving ambulance.

The Daily Mail leads says a judge's decision to free a father jailed for attacking an armed intruder will send a powerful message that householders have the right to defend their families. Munir Hussain, 53, had his 30-month jail sentence replaced it with a two-year term, but ordered that it should be suspended. Hussain's brother Tokeer, 35, had his 39-month jail term reduced to two years.

Tageszeitung reports that a former Siemens employee, Sedika Weingaertner, is suing her former employer for €2 million. She claimed she was bullied for years by her bosses and discriminated against for being a woman and an Arab.

A bad week for President Barack Obama got a little worse yesterday after Time Magazine for Kids announced that even the nation's youngsters were souring on him. Asked to grade Mr Obama on his first year in office, kids gave the President an average of C-minus, with 16 per cent going so far as to mark F on the President's report card.

An angry 83-year-old beat another 99-year-old man with a metal steering wheel lock in a fight over parking. The New York Post reports the geriatric dust up happened in Brooklyn, when Gersh Gofman, 83, pulled his car in front of the driveway outside Steve Pulwers' house. Pulwers, who lives above a doctor's office, said he was putting out rubbish and knocked on Gofman's window when the doctor returned for an emergency call and could not get into the driveway. He alleges Gofman got out and hit him with a metal tool, knocking him to the ground. Gofman, who had no criminal record, was charged with assault, menacing and harassment, and released on bail.
