Go graduates' union switches to GWU
The Union Gradwati Maltacom, which represents graduate workers at Go plc) today joined the General Workers' Union as an affiliate.
The GWU already represents the majority of Go employees.
UGM president Joe Agius said that by becoming GWU affiliates, workers' interests could be better protected.
The UGM was previously a member of the Confederation of Maltese Trade Unions.
GWU general secretary Tony Zarb said the union was proud that the UGM wanted to join as its affiliate. He said the union was showing its vision of how trade unions could work closely together in the best interest of workers.

Exactly, now GO is in the private hands, so it does not make a difference if PN or PL is in government.
The point is that under one collective agreement the workers are more united and that there is more solidarity.
On the other hand for the company its better that they have a union and more than that one union with a majority representing the workers. In todays' world many companies, especially in Europe are infavour of collective bargaining for the workers through a union representative.
So I don't understand why people are complaining about that.
Another point is that workers on a four day week were unionised and jointly work towards solidarity between one and another. While workers who have a family and who are not unionised lost their job as competition prevails between the workers so the end result is major redundancies and pressure on the family to cope with the living.

Demartino. Everytime you contribute you say the same things! I noticed this same comment repeatedly. Get over it man! GO is not even a public entity any longer. But you enjoy restating the same point over and over. RE CMTU. It is not UHM, MUBE and MAM and a couple house unions. Thus not strong as it were definately.

@GiovDeMartino i dont think so...... labour governments introduced the unions to function which they did and continued to do.... although it is a pity that clearly nationalists aim was to decrease the power of these unions so that they can go on doing whatever they like in the government as now the unions have no power........ I'm sorry to hear that comment... man we're in 2010... we should be talking about progressive, mature and creative politics today. Unfortunate for malta some people still remain close minded... US AND THEM...... NO....

First MUT, now UGM.
CMTU has become even more isolated. Who does it represent now, just UHM?
