Malta has recorded the highest proportion of e-commerce turnover with non-EU countries at 56 per cent, followed by Slovakia with 34 per cent and Ireland with 23 per cent.
Figures issued by the EU today show that the share of enterprise turnover generated from e-commerce in 2008 varied significantly between member states. The highest shares were recorded in Ireland (26 per cent) Finland and Sweden, both at 18 per cent. Malta's share was 11 per cent, on a par with Slovakia and only ahead of Lithuania, Poland and Romania.
Hungary had the highest e-commerce turnover with other EU member states at 50 per cent. Malta had 37 per cent. Understandably given the size of the country, e-commerce turnover within Malta itself was lowest in the EU, at 7 per cent.
The proportion of enterprises with a broadband connection in January 2009 was 94 per cent in Finland, followed by Spain and Malta on 93 per cent.
