Libyan Foreign Minister due in Malta for wide-ranging talks
The Maltese and Libyan Foreign Ministers during a previous meeting.
Malta and Libya are to hold talks on a range of subjects this week during a meeting of a Joint Commission formed of senior officials from both countries.
Libyan Foreign Minister Moussa Koussa will come to Malta to lead the Libyan delegation. Maltese Foreign Minister Tonio Borg will lead the Maltese officials.
The commission will discuss search and rescue, visa procedures, vocational training, tourism studies, marine pollution, fisheries and culture.
The ministers are due to hold separate talks, when issues such as illegal immigration will be discussed.
The commission last met in October 2008.

Is there any way that MALTA and LIBYA remove the requirement for visas? I understand that since we joined Schengen, any persons arriving in Malta will then have free movement within all Schengen states. This can be easily checked by the check-in staff at the airport / seaport to ensure they have a Schengen visa if they travel out of Malta to another Schengen country.
In the case of the Libyan nationals, there is no worry about illegal immigration, in fact most Libyan nationals travel overseas regularly and have money to spend overseas. They do not normally extend their stay, and surely do not apply for refugee status.

Let's hope expulsion of illegal immigrants back to Libya will be at the top of the agenda and agreed to.
