Airbus hosts University academics in Toulouse

Academics from the University of Malta and other European partners were recently hosted by Airbus SAS for a week-long workshop in Toulouse, France. The workshop focused on the design and implementation of a software tool aimed at optimising flight trajectories to reduce commercial aircraft emissions and fuel consumption.

The development of the tool forms part of the European Framework Programme 7 Clean Sky, a €1.6 billion EU-funded programme spanning seven years that is aimed at reducing the environmental impact of commercial aviation.

The University's involvement in the within Clean Sky project is the largest European research contract the University has ever won, valued at over €1 million.

David Zammit-Mangion, Kenneth Chircop and Matthew Xuereb attended the workshop on behalf of the University.

The University's work for the project is being carried out collaboratively between the two departments - the Faculty of Engineering's Department of Electronic Systems Engineering led by Dr Zammit-Mangion, and by the Faculty of ICT's Department of Computer Science, headed by Ernest Cachia.
