Winners to be announced today
The winners of the 2009 SportMalta Awards, l-Għażliet Sportivi Nazzjonali will be announced tonight at the Mediterranean Conference Centre during a variety programme that will be broadcast live on TVM, starting at 8.45 p.m.
This year the Sports Journalists Assoociation is again holding the contest in conjunction with Kunsill Malti għall-Isport in a joint venture that both parties are looking to prolong in future.
The 2008 winners of the Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year awards, William Chetcuti and Sue Abela, are again among the five finalists in both categories after a series of successful performances, in shooting and bowling respectively, at home and abroad.
However, Chetcuti faces a stern challenge this time around as he must contend with the daring exploits of Aaron Ciantar in the P1 championship besides the equally impressive snooker champion Alex Borg, sprinter Nikolai Portelli and horse racing driver Charles Degiorgio.
Abela, who also won the journalists' vote in 1999, has to reckon with the talents of Rebecca Thorensen Brincat (basketball), Therese Camilleri Brusson (squash), Kim Cassar (tennis) and Danica Spiteri (triathlon).
The KMS award winners will be determined via a more complex format that sees the participation of journalists, association delegates and the public's SMS voting.

I find such awards rather contradictory. One of the characteristics which distiguishes competitive is the stiving for a balanced competition. This is usually sought by a balanced match between the competitors. The nominees for the awards come from a very broad spectrum of sports and the sole criteria for success seems to be the accumulation of awards in respective competitive events. It like holding a competition for best car with the entries varying from a Ferrari, to a pickup truck and a Smart car. All excell in their own merit, but they cannot be placed in the same competition. There are also certain sports where competition is restricted to self competition.

There are plenty of sportsmen that seem to hae been ignored.
Look at the National rugby team and it's huge successes both locally and abroad.
And look at the young drivers forming part of Grimaldi Team Malta who in the 10 events in Sicily in which they participated, notched up wins every time, against some pretty stern opposition.
What does it take to get these sportsmen some form of recognition.
Just for information here are a few examples:
Zach Zammit - 20 years old - overall winner of the Cesaro 2008 hill climb. Podium finshes in other events.
Joshua Anastasi - 26 - Overall winner at Vittoria and Adrano Hill Climb. Podium finisher almost every time. Sicilian Circuit Champion 2009.
Alan Curmi - 26 - Overall winner Etna and Cesaro hill climbs in 2009, plus plenty of podiums.
And lots of other young Maltese drivers.
These drivers are hailed as champions in Sicily and Italy, but not here.
What a pity.
