While the citizens of, mainly the western countries are mobilising their altruism to help the Haitians following the devastating disaster, causing 200,000 direct deaths, besides injuries and resulting suffering due to injuries, hunger and thirst and risk of desease, the United Nations seems to have nothing to offer as a rapid deployment force in such cases of natural disasters. It is such a shame that the Haitians have to wait for days, maybe weeks, until the first real assistance, food, water, medicine, shelter arrives. The United Nations, mostly run by left wing politicians, is in a shambles, run by corrupt politicians, spending our monies on futile conferences, expensive air travel, limousine travel, 5 star hotels while the poor suffer endlessly.
Meanwhile the US and Europe are doing their utmost to arrive in time to assist the dying and destitute. I appeal to all Maltese to put their hands in their pockets until it hurts. The material help donated by us will take a few weeks to arrive, hoping that the US forces would have, by then, established a strong foothold.
