EPP coordinator sees Dalli as 'right man for the job'
The EPP Group Coordinator of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety, Peter Liese, has described John Dalli as 'very competent and is the right man for the job' of Commissioner for Health and Consumer Policy.
"With John Dalli taking charge, the health and food safety policies of the European Union will be in very good hands", Mr Liese said in a statement after yesterday's hearing before MEPs.
"In the area of information to patients, Mr Dalli explained that he will fight for independent information to patients and that he would first consider patients' interests before taking into account those of the industry," Mr Liese said.
He also welcomed Mr Dalli's strong support for unpaid donation of organs in Europe.
The group coordinator said Mr Dalli had also proved convincingly competent in the area of consumer protection and food safety particularly in view of his accent on better and broader information for the consumer without telling each consumer what to eat and what not.
"The clear positions of John Dalli in the area of consumer protection were just as convincing for me as his remarks in the field of health politics. For the upcoming five years, consumers and patients can expect that their rights will be strengthened. John Dalli is the right man for this position", Mr Liese concluded.

@ Vince Calleja
The PN elected one of two very valid prospects and Dr. Gonzi became Leader.
The LP, on the other hand, elected leader whose experience, charisma and anti-EU attitude made him second best to Dr. George Abela who had much more political clout, much more credible, was widely respected by most and who, Labourites themselves know, would have been a much better leader for the Party.
The PN enjoys the luxury of being able to choose among competent people. The LP chooses to simply get by and not seek the best. You yourself has admitted that Mr. Dalli would have been a good leader while not mentioning the fact that Dr.Gonzi has led the country for five years and won a second mandate. The former LP leader had won half a mandate and the present leader has yet to prove he can win one.
It is quite ironic that Dr. Abela who was rejected by the LP ended up President, while Mr. Dalli will probably be confirmed EO Commissioner in the next few days!
Not a bad record for PN leadership, at all!

@Alfred Muscat
At least my party cares not only for my interests but for all consumers that joined together as ONE against the unfair decisions of the HEARLESS Leader of your Party and his Cashier.
At least the LP cares and has a HEART.
By the way your Gonzipn does not need me to give him a bad image, he is doing that successfully by himself.

Shall we say, the PN should have elected Dalli as their Leader (like they say for Abela instead of Muscat!) ?
Surely Hon. Dalli is proving that he is much better than GonziPN to lead the country!!!

It is because we know John Dalli who as EU Commissioner and not a Gonzipn Minister is there to defend and uphold consumer rights and by Consumer, I feel that the MALTESE consumer should also NOW get a fair hearing especially on the VAT charged on the car registration tax.
It appears that you Mr. Tonna is not one that was defrauded by Dr. Gonzi's cashier Tonio Fenech with hundreds of €s tax on tax on purchase of family car.
No doubt Mr. Dalli is competent and he works with conscience will uphold the rights of the Maltese Consumer to be at par with his European counterpart.

All those who, like me, knew Hon Minister John Dalli for a long time had no doubt that he will be praised by ALL. He is competent and works with conscience.

I particularly enjoyed the unconditional support of the Labour MEPs at this delicate moment in Dalli's career. Dalli's comments after the test were also honourable in their own right, praising all MEPs irrespective of political baggage.

Maybe Mr John Dalli will now look after more and give a fairer deal to Maltese consumers, especially those tha have made a claim against the double taxation charged on vehicle registaratio tax.
