An illegal immigrant who tried to leave the island using false Spanish residency and identification cards was yesterday jailed for six months.

Abdul Ali Ghaniju, who was heading to Girona, was stopped by airport officials at the boarding gate when the alarm was raised about his travel documents. On checking, the papers he presented were found to be fake.

Subsequent investigations revealed he had also escaped from Safi detention centre last September 2.

Assisted by legal aid lawyer Martin Fenech, Mr Ghaniju pleaded guilty to using the false documents and escaping custody.

Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera jailed him for six months after taking into consideration his early guilty plea.
