There were slightly more male births than female births in the first half of last year, and there were 477 births to single mothers, information given in Parliament shows.

Social Policy Minister John Dalli said that between January and June 2009 there were 1,954 births, of which 1,010 were boys.

There were 24 pairs of twins and a set of triplets.

Mr Dalli said 174 babies were born to mothers who were not Maltese compared to 413 for the whole of 2008.
