No sites have been designated for offroad motoring in Malta and Gozo, the Prime Minister has confirmed in reply to a parliamentary question.

He said that since 2005, nine permits were issued for particular offroading events.

Motorsports enthusiast Joe Anastasi in comments to timesofmalta.com said he had been calling for such a site for decades.

"We have no designated site for neither offroad not on road motorsports. I have had many contacts with Italian circuit owners who are even interested in investing here, Mr Anastasi said.

He explained that offroad enthusiasts currently could make use of the well-kept ASM track at Ta' Qali but, he complained, the association had not even been granted title to that land. That was the least that the authorities could do, making it easier for the ASM to invest in better facilities, he said.

"Ta Qali and Hal Far could be a motorsport paradise with a little more initiative and commitment by the authorities," Mr Anastasi, former chairman of the Malta Motorsport Federation, said.
