PM reiterates position on black dust issue

The Prime Minister yesterday reiterated his commitment that Mepa experts would be asked to take the stand before a House committee to brief MPs on the black dust issue over localities in the south of Malta. At present, the dust samples collected were not sufficient to identify the source but they would be asked to explain their scientific analysis and conclusive position, once this was reached.

Dr Gonzi said the tests so far showed that the soot did not include the chemicals that would prove conclusively that it came from the power stations. He said every effort was being made to ensure that the tests were of the highest quality.

Dr Gonzi was answering a number of questions by Nationalist MP Jesmond Mugliett and Labour MPs Leo Brincat and Joe Mizzi.

Dr Brincat said the issue had turned into a tragic comedy.

Mr Mizzi challenged Mepa to make specific tests which would undoubtedly prove that the dust was emanating from the Marsa power station, especially during the period when precipitators were absent.

Mr Mugliett questioned why Mepa was concentrating its sampling in Fgura only when the problem also affected other localities, notably Paola and Tarxien. He offered to supply Mepa with black dust samples from his own garden.

Dr Gonzi said Mepa was concentrating on Fgura because the greatest number of complaints emanated from there. However, once a conclusive position was established, the government would make all results public in an open and transparent manner.
