Farewell to a boss and a dear friend
The first time I met Josette Leone Ganado was back in 1977. I had just been employed by her mother to work in the new shop she was due to open.
It was during the occasion of the official opening that I remember so clearly, Josette coming in through the hallway, as if it was this very day. She had been abroad with her mum. On their return it was a surprise for them both made by her father, who did everything to please his girl.
From then on we continued to meet whenever she used to drop over at the shop. She got married and had to go to England. Tragic circumstances occurred and she had to return to Malta not as a family but alone with a little girl. Time passed. Josette met Philip, a kind hearted, real gentleman and a family started to form and God gave them three lovely children, who were her pride and joy.
For the last 10 years I saw Josette every day. And when sickness struck and the suffering of all the therapies she had to pass through, she never said "why me?" She bore it all with Christian faith that overflowed from her, always reading her Bible or prayer books. She fought it out with all her might and courage. Josette even consoled others passing through some mishap in life. When I myself was passing through some bad moment she comforted me and prayed with me. To me she was my boss and my friend.
I can't believe she's gone. I enter her house waiting to see her or hear her voice but alas, she is nowhere to be seen. But her spirit is there with us all and her family.
Farewell Josette - for me it's very hard to say this to a friend - until we meet again. I know you went in peace and serenity near the Divine God whom you loved intensely. Now you are a flower in His paradise.
Look upon us from where you are and help us in our life. Bless us all, especially your beloved family and parents.

at the celebration during which little maria goretti was being beatified, during his homily the pope of that time remarked that not everyone was called to the kind of martyrdom suffered so heroically by little maria, but everyone was called to live to the full his and her christian calling which in itself is a daily kind of martyrdom. It seems ( from what I know of josette, having the grace to know her personally as well as what others are giving witness to) that Josette has lived in this remarkable way. maybe it is high time that such people are put forward as examples for all to see since the kind of martyrdom suffered by them is equally heroic and much more common for all of us to imitate. saints are people of flesh and blood who live with their feet solidly on the ground but have their minds, hearts and eyes focused on heaven from where come all their inspiration and strength. pray for us Josette until we meet again josette.
