A group of 23 Gozo Sixth Form students led by artist Mark Sagona and Lawrence Sciberras recently visited the Italian regions of Liguria and Tuscany on a tour designed to focus on the regions' artistic, cultural and natural attractions.

The group saw and held on-site lectures at many important landmarks of Medieval, Renaissance and Early Baroque Art in Florence. These included Michelangelo's David and Slaves at the Galleria dell'Accademia, Masaccio's Trinity at Santa Maria Novella church, and selected works at the Uffizi Gallery.

Other works seen were Rosso Fiorentino's Descent from the Cross at the Pinacoteca at Volterra and Jacopo della Quercia's Ilaria del Carretto at Lucca Cathedral.

Apart from savouring the great artistic cities of Florence, Siena, Pisa and Genova, the group also experienced the breathtaking scenery of the Cinque Terre, Portofino, Portovenere and Carrara.
