Capital geared up for magical day

Technicians were yesterday busy preparing for today's day-long activities for all the family at the capital city of Valletta.

Città Magica, an extensive programme of events, will be held along Republic and Merchants' streets and Freedom and St George's squares.

The event kicks off with bands playing in Republic Street to be followed by the Police Band,a display by police dogs and their handlers, and a historical re-enactment at St George's Square.

In the afternoon, several popular bands will take the stage at St George's Square while others will be playing unplugged in Merchants' Street. In the evening, others will perform in Freedom Square.

Several activities for children and adults will also take place across the city.

Despite a statement by the Public Transport Association that public transport would follow its normal schedule, it was then extended to midnight, albeit at a higher fare.

The park-and-ride service from Floriana to Valletta has also been extended.

Similarly, restaurants and shops will remain open till late. The latter will also be offering discounts over and above their sale.

Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism Mario De Marco yesterday visited the preparations and said the aim of the event was to generate activity in the city, especially when tourism was at its weakest.

"Other than attracting locals, the event will also attract tourists, many of whom book their holiday to coincide with national activities," he continued.
