The Labour Party's delegate in the Electoral Commission has written to the chief electoral commissioner to explain what steps would be taken to remove the possibility of abuse in the issuing of identity cards.
In a letter to chief electoral commissioner Edward Gatt, the PL delegate referred to the recent court judgement against Mary Magdalena Sultana who was found guilty of lodging a false police report that she lost her identity card and had another issued in someone else's name but carrying her photo. Ms Sultana took loans from a bank against a card issued fraudulently in her name.
The PL argued that the way ID cards were issued could lead to abuse as was proven by this case. It said it was to continue following its complaint to ensure that the necessary explanations were given for the situation to be effectively addressed.
