The Local Enterprise and Green Challenge awards have been won by the Mellieha and Attard councils, respectively.

The San Lawrenz council placed second in the Green Challenge Award, the Vittoriosa council in the Local Enterprise Award.

Presenting the awards, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said the government was helping councils organise more activities at a local level to attract more Maltese and tourists to their locality, increasing local trade.

Councils, he said, were being financially supported to take part in schemes drawn up by the government to generate business and strengthen environmental culture. These awards were to become an annual event.

Dr Gonzi said that more than 20 schemes were to be launched this year, ranging from those dealing with the building of local roads to businesses, the environment, alternative energy, sports activities and education.
