Computime's Ian Attard is the first fully certified Maltese trainer in Sun Solaris, the popular operating system for servers. Most gaming and telecommunication providers in Malta use Solaris, therefore the demand for Solaris training comes strong from these businesses.
This was the final step for Computime to provide the full range of training on Solaris on a local level. The company first became an authorised Sun education centre, and thus started on the Java path. Once the company has established and familiarised itself with Sun's training methods, it was only natural to move on to the Solaris courses.
"Skills learned during the courses include basic to advanced operating system procedures, spanning from basic configurations such as disk formatting and slicing, network configurations and troubleshooting techniques to operating system back-up and recovery procedures," Mr Attard told i-Tech . "All of these skills will be used during training courses as the course will be very hands-on and lets students experience these first hand. The environment was very conducive to learning with plenty of assistance available from Sun to make my process as painless as possible."
Solaris operating system certifications are split into three parts.
The Sun Certified Solaris Administrator Part 1 course starts from the very basics and tackles the basic and intermediate administrative tasks that a Solaris administrator will need to know. This course also builds the foundation for other more advanced concepts and is a prerequisite to the Sun Certified Solaris Administrator Part 2 course.
The second course builds on the concepts covered by the part 1 course and introduces other more advanced administrative tasks such as more advanced installation methods and operating system troubleshooting and diagnosis. After this course the student is eligible to do the exam and become a Sun Certified systems administrator.
The third course, the Sun Certified Network Administrator, focuses on the networking aspects present in the Solaris operating system and tackles subjects such as IP routing, highly redundant networking configurations and load-balancing techniques at the operating system level. After this course the student is eligible to do the exam and become a Sun Certified network administrator.
Mr Attard reassures that it is not difficult to learn how to use and exploit Solaris.
"Most of the Solaris concepts are very similar to the concepts found in other Unix-based operating systems, therefore prior knowledge in other operating systems such as Linux will prove to be very helpful in the transition to Solaris. Having said that, Solaris is not a difficult operating system to learn to use from scratch."
