Woman admits identity theft and fraud

A woman who got a bank loan after deceiving the ID cards office in order to issue her an ID card in the name of a friend, was today given a two-year jail term suspended for four years.

Mary Magdalene Sultana, of Hamrun, admitted to defrauding HSBC Bank of €18,600 and using a false identity.

The court was told that the woman had posed as another woman, a friend of hers, and told the police that she had lost her ID card.

She then went to the ID cards office, applied for and got a new ID Card in the name of her friend.

Using the new ID card she applied and was granted a bank loan of €18,600.

However investigations were launched by the bank and the police were called in after no repayments were made.

Ms Sultana admitted to the charges and was also ordered to repay the money within six months.
