Rooms in Valletta bastions ditch emptied
Updated 5 p.m.
Employees of the Lands Department this morning emptied rooms built in an illegally closed off section of the Valletta bastions ditch, close to the Yellow Garage.
The operation was conducted under the watchful eye of the police.
The items that were removed ranged from an old set of drums to a pool ladder, chairs and a motorcycle.
The rooms were demolished in the afternoon.
This section of the bastions is set for restoration works in the near future.

This is exactly what Malta needs right now: order, discipline and embellishment. I appeal to Dr Gonzi to give Dr Azzopardi more resources and man power to get more done.
We and our kids can enjoy a cleaner country and we can boast about it with our tourists.

At the Circo Massimo in Rome, the 'mini colosseo' has since forever been refurbished into flat. What a prestigious address! How romantic!
Nearer home, in Valletta, Malta, just beneath Hastings Gardens I remember a humble abode with a delightful little batch of tended garden, with 'cabbage-patch' - what in UK is known as an allotment (legally traditional there).
Near the Fossa I remember ferocious barking of dangerous dogs, looked in a small space in the wall. And this of course, near the Yellow Garage. There may be others of course. And not forgetting the dug-outs in the wall for courting couples of yesteryear (now there's Paceville).
The ex-tenants of this 'cottage' had to get on the property ladder somehow and they did it their way. Not really justified. Malta's heritage is 'sacred'. Certain things should not be allowed. But it's all part of the social fabric. Troglodyte lifestyle is not unknown elsewhere of course. Cappadocia in Turkey springs to mind. Ancient churches and more modern housing in the tufa, with all mod-cons, are everywhere there. They are veritable money-spinners. Ah! Cappadocia, the land of fairy-chimneys! So many sacred frescoes! So much running water in a godless land! So very blessed!

If as it is said, these rooms had been illegally built, then how come they have electricity service as can easily be seen in the v/clip? I think someone needs to reply and take responsibility

The bastions around our cities have been taken over for long enough, it's good that finally action is taken to give back the glory deserved to these majestic monuments of our heritage. Well done to Lands department and Jason Azzopardi for the action, and well done for the upcoming restoration.

Again, well done Dr Azzopardi. At least we have a Government member doing something, not just telling us what the plans are. Next time please, the "FAVELAS" below the Mediterranean Conference Centre.

PROSIT !!!!!!!!!!!!
I work in Valletta and many times, i have seen the family who took over these rooms picnicking just outside the gates as if they owned the place!!!
Let's hope they are made to pay for the clean up expenses as it is unfair that the general public pays for this.
