I have lived in Birżebbuġa all my life (59 years) and have never before witnessed the extent of sea water flooding at St George's Bay, Birżebbuġa, as in these last few weeks.
Although in earlier times we experienced high tides on a few occasions, it has now become an almost daily experience that the sea water creeps up and through the storm water drain channels beneath the bay's garden and playground by the sea and fills the road up to the centre strip. If this strip were not there, the sea would surely go across the road and reach the level of the pavement.
The people living across the bay, in front of the garden, should feel quite lucky that we have had no rain these past two or three weeks, as otherwise the storm water would not be able to drain out to the sea, resulting in flooding their ground floor rooms.
It seems that global warming has slowly but surely had an effect on the sea level at least at St George's Bay. I hope that our local council, whose offices are just a few metres away from the flooding area, will take the necessary action in order to address this matter with some urgency. Perhaps building a raised road over the existing one, as the one done at Msida, would solve this problem in the short term.
