A Libyan man caught in possession of four small pieces of cannabis on Sunday was yesterday conditionally discharged and is to be deported.

The police stopped Ali Mohamed Alberegli, 30, in Paceville and they found the drugs on searching him.

He at first refused to cooperate with them and hand over his particulars, a court heard.

However, in his statement to the police, Mr Alberegli admitted to owning the drugs. In yesterday's arraignment, he admitted to possessing the cannabis and refusing to give his details to the officers.

Magistrate Edwina Grima conditionally discharged him for one year after taking into consideration that he would be deported once sentenced.

Police Inspectors Victor Aquilina and Johann Fenech prosecuted.

Defence lawyer Mark Busuttil appeared for Mr Alberegli.
