Madliena, Kirkop and Mqabba will by the end of this year enjoy the rare distinction of having all their roads in a good state.

Parliamentary Secretary Chris Said, who is responsible for local government, said today that the government was awarding those localities extra funds to resurface the few streets they have which are in a bad state.

The funds will be used for the surfacing of 22 streets in Madliena (through Swieqi Council) 10 in Kirkop and 26 in Mqabba.

Dr Said said an additional €5.2 million were being given to other councils as special funds for road works. The funds are ring-fenced and cannot be used for other purposes.

Additional funding of €4.8 million for the roads was given to the councils last year and over 160 streets were redone.

Dr Said said the councils were being given the possibility of reaching agreements with the contractors to also maintain the streets for a number of years.
