The "separation of reason and emotional instincts is leading to ambiguous lifestyles" making it urgent for people to "educate their minds and hearts", Gozo Bishop Mario Grech has warned.
Delivering a homily during Mass on New Year's Day, Mgr Grech said modern society was facing a deficit of human values, worse than the financial deficit.
"The root of society's tiredness and discouragement is the educational crisis in the formation of the individual," he said, talking of education in a wide context that transcended academic boundaries.
"Education enables individuals to be free, more so in today's world that promotes a mistaken concept of freedom," he said.
Urgent action in favour of serious education, Mgr Grech added, was needed, especially in today's epoch where relativism was creating uncertainty.
"There are those who are manipulating history, particularly the history of Christianity in Malta. History cannot be erased and we have to recount it in an objective way," Mgr Grech said.
