Valletta police station was awarded a Police Shield yesterday after the number of reported crime in the district dropped by 32 per cent in 2009 over the previous year.

The decrease was the largest registered by any of the 10 Maltese police districts.

At an awards ceremony at the Police Depot in Floriana, Police Commissioner John Rizzo rewarded the Valletta police station for its efforts to combat crime.

He presented a certificate of merit to two police officers for their outstanding contribution to the force.

Police Constable Paul Spiteri was rewarded for managing to put out a car on fire with people in it on August 17, 2008 when he was off duty. He also won the Officer of the Year Award.

The other recipient, Police Constable Charlton Falzon Cascun, was off-duty on February 2 last year when he apprehend a man wanted by the Criminal Investigation Department. At the time of his arrest, the suspect was driving a stolen car.
