Well, the reason that it is advertised in Italian and or in English is because they intention is to attract tourists from those areas.
If it was advertised in Maltese, no one but the Maltese would understand it.
My feeling is that it should have been advertised maybe 3 months ago so that people will have time to make arrangements, if they were going to visit.
Hopefully it will be a success. There certainly seems to be a lot of activities.

@Franco Farrugia Your letter of 4 days ago: Why not 'Belt Magika'? Why? Why? Why do we have such an inferiority complex over our language? You suggested another name in Italian MAGICA = IMSAHHRA in Maltese (I'm still using REAL Maltese after being away for 32 years)

@ The tourist trade would be well cared for with the main title in Maltese, with foregin sub-titles, in English and in Italian if that is so desirable. The fact remains that if such an event had to be organised in any other country, the main title would be in the national language because they are proud of it. Unlike us.
@ Dominic Chircop: X'ghandu x'jaqsam jekk jien inix 'imperjalista' jew le? Anzi, pjuttost il-kontra: qed inkun 'nazzjon'-alist.
@ A.E. Abela: There were times when VLT shops did not open for such events because it didn't suit them. Businesses do exactly what it suits them to do - same old story.
@ Vincent Arrigo Azzopardi: Criticism is not 'moaning' and if that's what you understand by a polite comment, well, tough! I am not out to 'destroy' anything. I am merely making a point about the language of the theme. And far be it for you to shut me up.
@ Oliver Mallia: You cannot compare VLT to Qawra/Bugibba where there is absolutely nothing stylish. Was there last night. A ghost-town. A disgusting place. And whose fault is it? Certainly not previous residents who had to move out and away.

Fuq kollox irridu nargumentaw! Nemmen bis-shih li hemm bzonn isir sforz kollettiv biex il-Belt Valletta tinghata qawmien (specjalment filghaxija) is-sena kollha u mhux biss darba/drabtejn f'sena. Il-fattur tal-hinijiet tal-ftuh tal-hwienet nahseb li huwa determinanti f'dan kollu. Filwaqt li kull impjegat ghandu d-dritt tieghu ta' 'break', nahseb li wasal iz-zmien li jitwal il-hin li l-hwienet idumu miftuha. Tghin ghal generazzjoni ta' aktar kummerc u tigbed aktar nies lejn il-Belt.

Ma'xi dwejjaq. Is it possible that there are so many people in Malta whose their only aim is to moan and destroy anything that's good. Just shut up and be glad that these nights are being organised

@ Franco Farrugia 'Abela and Agius: So, what do you expect? Do you mean that no such events should be held in Valletta?' We own a shop in Valletta and welcome these events more than you can ever imagine, but, what we expect is a little consideration to the shop owners who in these events happen to open for business and not to be a public toilet. Apparently you did not understand my blog.

On the same language subject, the Maltese National radio station's jingle says Radio Malta... that's more of a joke than this in my opinion... Radioooo Maltaaaa... But on the other hand, why do some people have to blame PN or MLP for every article??

Aren't these activities organized in Italy? or were they invented in Italy? Perhaps that explains the name. I stand to be corrected, but maybe someone could shed some light on this.

Why use Italian expression when the Maltese is as poetic as the Italian? Belt imsahra, or some more pleasant appelation. The P.N. cannot do without ther Italian mentality. It is too engrained in their subconscious.

@ Franco Farrugia I love our native language but I also appreciate that these events also provide a good vehicle to enhance our plant product to attract tourism,’ Magic City’ and ‘White Nights’ are more self explanatory for the tourist trade, don’t you think so?

Franco Farrugia, Mhux Belt Magika, izda Belt Imsahhra. U ghalfejn dan il-garr ? Jewwilla int xi imperjalista ? Ovvjament ma kellix il-Maltese fonts mixghulin. Ghidli naqra kif nghid fonts bil-Malti. Taf meta 'nkun kburi bl-ilsien tieghi ? Meta kull triq imsemmija Geronimo Abos jibdluha kif suppost, Girolamo Abos, l-ewwel muzicist ta' 'mportanza li kien Malti.

@ Charles J. Buttigieg: With all due respect, an 'official' language does not take precedence over an official language which is also our national language! @ Abela and Agius: So, what do you expect? Do you mean that no such events should be held in Valletta? Come on, especially Mr Agius, wise up and accept that the world does not revolve around you!

Instead of 'Valletta Magica', I could suggest 'Belt tal-Fatati'. Problem is, if this were indeed adopted and posters advertising the event were posted all over the place, some clever person would go around with a felt-tip pen and re-arrange the words to read, 'Belt il-Fatati'. Because that is indeed what our capital is the rest of the year.

Can our dear government note that these 'occasions' in Valletta are ruining us small busineses because they are taking over the masses to Valletta. It is really unfair !!!

i am trying to trace my family from malta . Thomas Henry Agius -(Mother Rosa agius) Father possible Francesco Aguis ) born 24 Feb 1866 Malta, Died 10th May 1952, Lidcombe, NSW. Thomas came to Australia with rest of the family from London on the ship called ‘Ormuz’ arriving in Sydney on the 29th April 1922. Thomas was in the Navy, but have no records to support this as yet.Thomas married -GIOVANNA ROSA CATERINA PIA GIUSEPPA BORG - known as Giovanna Rosa or ‘Gena Rosa‘. married 21st March 1887 @ Senglea Malta. Gena was born 26th February 1869 Senglea, Malta . Died 1947, Petersham, NSW. arriving in Sydney on the 29th April 1922. had 10 children most went to Australia to meet son George who sailed out of Malta with a millionair . Tomasso was in Navy so was son Joseph. May have had a laundry service on wharf at Velletta or near by, were in shipping and also relatives in catering . The family appeared to be of the sea in some way. Would love to know if tommaso had any brothers maybe carmelo or sisters . would like to confirm mother and father as natural parents . .

Isn’t English our second official language, what’s with Citta Magica and Notte Bianca? What’s wrong with Magic City and White Nights? Are they trying to take us back to the bad old days of Pappa Nerik or what?

Stands to reason that the country that bans literature in its own language while allowing the same material in foreign languages would use foreign languages for official event titles.

Just curious. Would this event be another case of unfair competition towards the catering outlets in Valletta? Since, at the last, similar event ‘notte bianca’ there were about 200 food stands on the streets, cooking and selling whatever; disregarding the high E.U. catering regulations and standards as enforced on shop owner.
