Riding the waves

Golden Bay turned into a surfers' paradise this afternoon with a few taking the waves that added character to the picturesque bay.
Reader Hannah Smith captured this man on her camera as soon as he came off a rather heavy wave.

My God all this negativity about everything is making me feel sick!!! Its a simple photo of this guy enjoying the waves!! This naggering is asphyxiating....why won't you go spend your life in a light bulb? Sadly some people have forgotten what fun is......

@Franco Farrugia, this is a great sport that is healthy, challenging, non-polluting etc etc. Positive all round!!!! And here you go again. If it's not hunting, it's driving. If it's not driving you're nagging about something else.
Why do you see the negative in everything and point it out with what seems to be unholy glee?

Great Pic! Great Sport! And please people .... get a life. This guy is enjoying his sport and having the time of his life; the dangers are well understood. You should ask that to anyone who braves the cool temperatures and goes for a dip at this time of year (open water distance swimmers, tri-athletes, etc.) We Maltese love to bicker about anything ....

STOP bickering!! At the end of the day it's me riding the waves and I am fully aware of the dangers involved, that's what makes experienced surfer, we study weather charts and warning signs too. Joe Muscat has no place saying these things as he was not there and never is!! PS: it is a surf board..

@ Joe Muscat: ' ... concentrating on the negative.' No. I was merely concentrating on safety, sir! Well, it's not me on that surfboard. And then, ' uuuuu miskin, kemm kien minn taghna, silly messages of condolences and so forth! Sport, yes, but safety first and foremost.

I would like to add that I am aware of the dangers that these beaches hold, we are experienced surfers who have surfed around the globe, we have a community of surfers here under the Malta Surfing ASSOCIATION which we started in 2007, thanks to our experiences we have pulled out swimmers in danger many times at Ghajn tuffieha, so we offer life saving at our own expense! If you want to know more about what we do in Malta join our Face Book group SurfMalta.

@ Franco Farrugia
It is pretty obvious, judging by this photo, that the surfer is experienced and knows exactly what he's doing. Yes there are undercurrents in ghajn tuffieha, like there are in all surfing spots all over the world. When you surf you learn how to deal with currents. It's part of the sport. I understand your concern for safety but rest assured that the surfer was not alone in the water and his surfboard also acts as a buoyancy aid if need be. Unfortunately in Malta surfing is a very young and small sport so we do not get the luxury of a lifeguard when conditions are good. However, Maltese surfers know the surf spots well and are very used to their undercurrents.
This is the nature of surfing. It's a pity you do not understand the sport because you are missing the beauty of it by concentrating on the negative. Maybe I can lend you a surf board and then see what you think....Happy New Year

Indeed, a beautiful photo - but has this person, 'riding the wave', followed the precautions and warnings that there were for this beach, yesterday? We know how dangerous Ghajn Tuffieha is, with its undercurrents. And then, an accident takes place and we start pouring in our commiserations, heaven forbid!

Does anyone know if there will be these waves again tomorrow? The wind is unchanged according to maltaweather.com.
Thanks
