Some €303,000 have been allocated to nine local councils so they can take part in EU programmes.

The money, distributed to the councils by Public Dialogue Parliamentary Secretary Chris Said, falls under the Co-financing EU Projects' Scheme.

The councils that received the funds were: Vittoriosa, Għarb, Ħamrun, Kirkop, Dingli, Senglea, Mtarfa, San Lawrenz and Valletta along with the Association of Local Councils.

Dr Said explained that the fund was intended to help councils be more proactive in applying for and taking part in EU projects. Most councils were willing to take part in such projects, however, they tended to be held back because of lack of funds. The new fund was intended to address the problem. Next year, the fund will go up to €500,000.
