Malta's New Year celebrations kick off in style
Video: Paul Spiteri Lucas
Malta’s New Year celebrations took off this evening with a big street party in St Anne Street, Floriana.
The main thoroughfare to the city became pedestrian and was lined with food stalls. Sound systems and a screen showing was what happening on stage and celebrations in other countries were also set up.
The show started at 6.30 p.m. with a New Year's Eve Parade, featuring a band and 300 dancers from various schools, accompanying the arrival of Father Christmas on a karozzin.
A live concert by the Mark Spiteri Lucas Band, with the participation of a number of singers, kicked off at nine and music will continue until the early hours.
The climax is expected to be the striking of midnight, marked by fireworks displays and a shower of confetti and balloons.
The holding of the party seemed at risk as the police objected but the council argued that it had the right to close a main road for the holding of a national event.

Well done to the Floriana Local Council and the organizers of this magnificent street party. @ Mr Azzopardi..it WAS a national event ,anzi an international event because there were alot of foreigners celebrating and enjoying themselves, and as for your comment "good but a far cry from what happens in major countries" what else did you expect? we have no skyscrapers or bridges so what?? we have historical buildings like the Floriana arches and we are very proud of them. How come some Maltese are always critisizing whatever we do ? Happy new Year to all just the same.

Top marks for Floriana Council's initiative. It was good but a far cry from what happens in major cities around the world. Whereas abroad the emphasis is on collectively enjoying new year celebrations, here it seems that exclusivity is the order of the day with private parties being the norm. That is why Floriana Council's initiative is even more significant. One hopes that the event becomes a national celebration like elsewhere, with better organisation and more spectacle. Well done to FLC

In general it was very good, however in my opinion this was not a national event........the banner of St. Publius stating he's is the patron saint of Malta was out of place....New Year's Eve celebrations have nothing to do with St. Publius.

What a night, the family and friends atmosphere was just great. we have always paid good money in the past for a good night out on NYE this was free and much much enjoyable. we are sorry for any inconveniece caused to drivers but this was the first time held so be patient, we hope next year ,if they let have a next year we'll have more co-operation, and please make it a new years resolution and stop the complaining and ,, as if it is the first time there was havoc with traffic in floriana. and and another thing, that you for giving one day in 365 without pollution...

It was a great evening.. well done Floriana LC and well done Mr Mayor!!
To all those objecting... and getting all sorts of excuses....
I think that the thousands that flocked into St. Anne street have given you the answer to your questions!!
Next year.. we will be there again and encourage our friends to come with us too!!

I do not wish to be patronizing but I beleive the police
shall collaborate better with local councils but
we should keep in mind that St Anne street
is a tad weird to close - the only pity is that I heard about this
event when it was gone and yesterday was chatting
away that in Malta we rarely held a National NYE activity.

I was pleasantly surprised on how well organized it was, making the experience that much better! I arrived at the Park & Ride at around 8:30 and found parking straight away, from there it was a short 5 minute walk up to St. Anne Street, and found my spot for the evening next to the bar. Even upon leaving at 1:30 there were still a lot of people but no fuss to get out.
Well done to the organizers!

Now it is time for the aftermath. Whoever breaks the law should pay or else anyone can get out of it. Next time other local councils will proceed with their activities without obtaining the police neccessary permits. This is serious and I am the first person to worry about it. Was the police commissioner wrong in objecting for such an activity to be raised. I would like an answer and soon please.

It's good to see people enjoying themselves as a community and thankfully the weather was in their favour.
The problem with the closure of St Anne Street was the confusion and traffic jam caused because there was no warning of this until one reached the first set of traffic lights close to the fountain. Had there been adequate warning and signs set up starting from Hamrun, Pieta and Marsa people trying to get to Valletta would have taken other routes in the first place.
Perhaps it would be pertinent to suggest that many of us attend courses in Forward Thinking rather than in Lateral Thinking :-)))
