Airport van crashes into aircraft
A Globe Ground Malta van has crashed into a Libyan Arab Airlines aircraft just before 2 p.m., 20 minutes before the jet left on its flight to Tripoli.
The van, which was parked close to the Bombardier CRJ-900ER, crashed into it. No one was injured and the damage was minor but the flight has been delayed. Passengers will be leaving Malta on an Air Malta flight this evening.
No one at Globe Ground Malta was available for comment.

Oh come on!! You really have to investigate "to establish whether this was the result of technical fault or human error." ?? There are a number of rules and regulations that have to be followed when using and parking a vehicle airside - but as you said I am sure these are being investigated! Also before you rate my answer as 'speculative' or 'largely baseless' I would like to inform you that as an architect I am well aware of airport regulations, parking distances etc.
and @ Andrew Zammit Manduca
Very well said!! I could not agree more.

As the maltese say pajjiz tal-Mickey Mouse. We are capable of doing anything here in Malta even blaming an empty van to move alone. Why can't we stop pointing fingers and blaming other rather just being a man a accepting the blame. After all accidents do happen no one is perfect in life.

In an effort to clarify some of the comments contained herein, GlobeGround Malta would like to state that at the time of the incident the van was NOT being driven.
It was parked in its appropriate holding bay when for reasons which are yet to be established it rolled forward (unattended) and came to rest against the aircraft.
A full investigation is currently underway to establish whether this was the result of technical fault or human error. Nobody was injured in the incident.
Pending the conclusion of the investigation, any other comments or allegations on this case are purely speculative and largely baseless.

Accidents don't just happen. They are caused, by carelessness. And in this case, I can't imagine any scenario where it would be non-culpable to hit a parked aircraft, short of mechanical failure, but even that could have been avoided by proper maintenance.
Mr. Hilton, do you understand the concept of insurance? There isn't a magic corporation that just pays out for people's stupidity, you know. The reality is that those of us who are careful pay for those of us who are not. More "accidents" are no problem to an insurance companies, they simply mean higher premiums.

Accident - Accidents happen anywhere, anytime with anything. An airport is no exception to that. As long as noone was hurt - congratulations and a happy New Year. The insurance will pay for it. And that Globe Ground is not available for comment is clear. Under Insurance regulation they are not permitted to make comments on any insurable event. And what comment should they make: Yes, a van hits a plane? You already know that anyway.
But I have a question: "The van, which was parked close to the Bombardier CRJ-900ER, crashed into it" . A van that was parked can not actually crah into anything. Maybe the plane crashed into the parking van?

Just a few examples elsewhere, so accidents happen everywhere. It looks quite obvious to me - the driver of the van was so used to looking for holes in the road that he did not look up to see the aircraft nose in front of him LOL.

@ A Zammit
I like your comment and I'd understand that this happens in Orly / Heathrow / Gatwick or any major airport ( as you say ) where there are loads of planes and traffic all the time... But we're in Malta A Zammit.. on a clear nice day, no rain, no fog and I would say - lack of sleep maybe!! jkn jkn
@ John Schembri - Sorry but I cannot link your comment with the article here. This accident can be taken in many different point of views - from a human mistake, to a malfunction in the van to even being made on purpose... but where do 'Americans' fit in this article???

The same thing happened in August when I was about to board a plane to Munich, but this time an Air Malta plane was involved. Or at least, so we were informed. We were informed that we had to wait for an aircraft that was on its way from Turkey to Malta and had a 4 hour delay.

The only things which occur more frequently here in Malta are comments by people who haven't worked anywhere except behind a desk in some forgotten office.
What would the comments have been if the serious security breach in the US happened here in Malta?
Everyone makes mistakes even the 'big' Americans.
