@ Malcolm Farrugia "Why a suspended sentence, he should be given a four year prison sentence to be served in solitary confinement, and when he serves the time the authorities should kick him back to Nigeria. " The magistrate probably took into account the lad's clean criminal record. All illegal immigrants arrive in Malta with a clean police conduct certificate. Putting yourself and others in danger, wasting the AFM's time and resources, not carrying documents, giving false details to immigration don't count, anzi......msieken, xi tridhom jaghmlu?

What about sending him back home? What is stopping the Govt from sending him home?

What is "a four year suspended jail term" ? That should read, for example, "A two year jail term suspended for four years". Of course in this young gentleman's mind, he got away with it. I have seen how people are treated in normal police road-blocks in Lagos and I don't blame him for treating Maltese policemen the way he did.

@ Matthew Borg. If he is in Malta legally than his visa should be cancelled, his passport stamped and put on the first aircraft out. And good riddance.

Read and listen to the media r galea.
Adrian Wirth They are relevant because they show the attitude of these Nigerian illegal immigrants who have absolutely NO right to be in Malta. They must all be EXPELLED.

This person spent six months in a detention centre. How many tourists do you know who spend their holidays in detention centres?

The xenophobic expressions of angst common to an apparant majority of respondents ought to give our legal, social and educational authorities much to consider. Presumptive and, at least to me, offensive and racial comments regards the residential status let alone origins of the youth concerned are wholly out of place and irrelevant. Whom so ever the Magistrate in this case it appears, as it should be, that our law has been applied fairly, with enlightenment and consistent with sentencing of European origin citizens that gives something to celebrate after a year where some examples of inconsistent sentencing gave all appearances of there being one law for us and another for 'them'.

Does this mean that when (if) your Muscat is PM he will get ALL these CRIMINALS (as you call them) in some 50 planes and sends them back to where they came from? Is that what the PL will be doing or is it just sweet talking like the VAT issue when the PL made everyone believe that if elected they would do away with this tax? U halluna !!!!

I fully concur with your suggestions as to how the Nigerian should be handled but I sincerely deplore the discourteous and reprimanding tone you have directed towards Dr Gonzi irrespective of the opinion you could have about him, or anyone else for all that matters. May I also point out that addressing someone by his surname only is also rather unethical.

Some days ago The Times and the PN media reported Dr Simon Busuttil saying that he had persuaded the European Parliament to give a few million euros to Malta from the European Return Fund to pay for the repatriation of illegal immigrants. It seems that Dr Gonzi is refusing to use that money because repatriation of illegal immigrants goes against his conscience. Nigerians do not qualify for refugee status. Their country is huge and rich in oil and other natural resources. Through reports of court cases we know that we have too many Nigerians in Malta and many get into trouble with the law. It's time Dr Gonzi started using the money Dr Busuttil obtained from the EU and organise charter flights to Nigeria and other countries of origin of illegal immigrants.

When I read such news, I feel perplexed. Since, in reference to previous rulings, the penalty for not giving ones particulars to the police, in jail term, is equal to that of involuntary manslaughter.
Is one too extreme or the other ridiculously irrelevant to the crime?

Why was he not put forthwith on the first aircraft to his country when Nigerians have no right to be here or to claim any refugee or humanitarian status. Why are such criminals allowed to remain in Malta?
Are you listening Gonzi or are you still in your trance?
