Twentieth Century Fox's epic adventure grossed an estimated $159m from 106 markets in its first weekend of exhibition.

Combined with the $73m American debut, James Cameron's film has amassed $232m worldwide and should see Fox International past the $2bn mark by today.

Recording the sixth highest day and date launch in history, Fox International will become the second Company this year after Sony Pictures Releasing International to achieve the feat and only the sixth in history to do so

'Avatar' opened in cinemas in Malta with a preview on December 16 and continued with its exhibition on December 17.

'Avatar' places at Number One in this week's cinemas Box Office chart of films released by KRS Film Distributors.
